A serious multi-vehicle crash has resulted in one death and left two others injured on the Monash Freeway, causing major traffic disruptions for motorists traveling outbound from the city.
Emergency services responded to the collision involving two cars and a motorcycle rider. Authorities confirmed that one person died at the scene, while two others sustained injuries and were transported for medical treatment. The conditions of the injured individuals have not yet been publicly disclosed.
As a result of the crash, all outbound lanes of the Monash Freeway have been closed between Heatherton Road and Belgrave-Hallam Road while police and investigators work at the scene.
Motorists are being diverted off the freeway at Heatherton Road, with detours in place through Endeavour Hills and Hallam North to rejoin the freeway at Belgrave-Hallam Road. Authorities are warning of significant outbound delays, with congestion already building from Wellington Road.
Drivers heading away from the city are strongly advised to exit the freeway as early as possible and seek alternate routes. Suggested alternatives include EastLink, Dandenong Bypass, South Gippsland Highway, Pound Road, and Stud Road.
Traffic officials are urging motorists to allow extra travel time and avoid the area where possible as emergency crews continue their work and investigations remain ongoing.
Further details about the cause of the crash are expected to be released as inquiries continue.
